 SECURITY TIPS

You've locked yourself out of your house. That's okay, you say, because you keep an unlocked window in the back of the house, or maybe you have a hidden key in your mail box or on top of a window ledge?

You may think this is a good idea, but guess what? If you can get in easily, so can a burglar!

Over 85,000 homes were broken into in Ontario in 2000. You can make your home more secure and reduce your chances of being a victim with a small amount of time and money.

Most burglars spend no longer than 60 seconds trying to break into a home. Good locks - and good neighbours who watch out for each other - can be big deterrents to burglars.

  • Burglars will look for weak spots around your house - no lighting, bushes or shrubs to hide in, slightly open windows, weak locksets, etc. Walk around your property looking for weak spots and jot them down.
  • Don't leave notes on the door announcing your absence. A note saying you will be back at 6:00 p.m. tells the thief he has plenty of time to ransack your home and take your possessions.
  • Having a good deadbolt on your door will not be enough if the door frame is not reinforced around the strike plate.
  • Make sure door hinge screws are not exposed and that the hinge pin cannot be removed.
  • Join your Neighbourhood Watch Program or start one if there isn't one in your neighbourhood. Call your local police for more information.
